I read this article today  Twilight: the franchise that ate feminism and although I agree with some of Mr Journo’s points I think he has missed a massive argument, also he writes like an arrogant ‘hows your father’, so from now on he’s a nob face.

So Twilight seems to be hated on by most straight men I know, I don’t know if it’s jealousy, whether the film intimidates their sexuality (I mean you can’t say those actors aren’t fit) or the fact it’s just a crap film.

Nob Face over at the Guardian reckons…

You can’t get away from a strange paradox. Women are using their regained power over the picturehouse to trash their hard-won independence. What mysterious creatures they are.

‘What mysterious creatures they are’… twat! Nice to know you’re still as derogatory and sexist as a Victorian Catholic!

Also… ‘regained power’ when did that happen? Have I blinked? I’m sorry nob face, when did we have the power originally in cinema in order for it to be ‘regained’?

So yes, Bella in Twilight gives up her life for another man. She is countlessly being protected and saved by men. Yes, I see your point Nob Face, not really very feminist. I concur, I’m not a fan.

I will argue love/lust is a part of life, I don’t think it feminist to boycott these parts of life. As long as you have other stuff going on I don’t see a relationship as bad. People help guide us on our paths all the time it’s only looked down upon if you’re female and the person who’s helping you find your identity and your path just happens to be your fella.

But, lets not forget another huge part of feminism in film is the power of the gaze, aka scopophillia, where the camera’s lens is predominantly male and glorifies womens beauty and leaves women unfulfilled in their power to perve over men.

This is what Twilight achieves for feminism… It lets women observe male beauty. If we are to compare Twilight to most Hollywood films I would say that Twilight is stepping forward in Feminism in the context that it gives women the ‘power of the gaze‘.  Its love story however is just the usual Hollywood tosh: damsel in distress type thing.

To be honest the Twilight Saga is cheese on toast. What I love is the fact that I get to check out Jakes hot bod whilst watching vampires fight giant wolves.

But there is a compramise guys; you have Megan Fox in Transformers (also a crap film) we have Robert Pattinson and Sam Embry in Twilight, that’s fair right?

This marks a revolution in digital film making, maybe there’s going to be a new ‘New Wave’ of cinema now that we have this new high quality easily transportable and cheap camera… Hmmm!

The new iPhone shoots 720p HD, nice and some clever mite has even attached DSLR lens attached to the iPhone 4.

Will this mean move out the way Canon 7d, hello iPhone 4?

I just don’t know?

Velvet.Swag interviews Feldberg, the award winning band from Iceland who are currently making waves across Europe.

Rosa’s voice is amazing, a modern poppy version of Billie Holiday met with fun happy riffs! Pure summer music.

Their track ‘Dreaming’ won ‘Best Song’ at the Icelandic music awards and is about to being released worldwide on Kitsune.

Morton co-wrote the film with Tony Grisoni, (screenwriter of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), the film is inspired  by Morton’s childhood experiences of care homes,  abuse and faith. Last year, she told the Guardian that she had “diluted” her own experiences of “violence, sexual abuse and torture” in making The Unloved, saying that, if she hadn’t, it would have been “a horror film”.

The Guardian recently did a really interesting interview with Morton about The Unloved which if defs worth a read.

Have a listen about 33 seconds in. I can no longer listen to this track in the same way again. I love it!

And now I really want  some cheesy bread mmmm….

Cinematically it has a lot going for it (along with a stonker of a budget) and (as most  filmmakers try to do) it’s trying to pass on a message, great.

It got me thinking about Lynne Ramsay‘s Black and White Town by the Doves, and the way in which it tells the story of a tormented youth (a theme running throughout most of her films). Watching the characters in the video makes me feel like I’m walking through a gallery, looking at the various potraits on the walls and thinking about the story behind each character.

There’s something organic and raw about this video. Ramsay doesn’t use explosions or attention seeking scenes of gratuitous violence to pass on her message, but a humble and subtle reality which is what gives the video it’s strength.

If you haven’t seen any of Lynne Ramsay’s films before I’d reccomend you do so now.

Here’s the trailer for Movern Callar, an adaptation of Alan Warner’s novel, starring Samantha Morton (legend).

It’s an amazing film, with a great soundtrack!
